Light Therapy
Beat the dark Dutch winters. Professional light therapy to boost your mood and energy.
Why light therapy?
The Netherlands gets as little as 7 hours of daylight in winter. If you come from a sunnier climate, this dramatic change can seriously affect your mood, energy and motivation.
Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is very common among international students in the Netherlands. Light therapy is a proven, non-invasive treatment that helps regulate your body's natural rhythms and lift your mood.
Symptoms of SAD
- Persistent low mood or sadness
- Lack of energy and constant tiredness
- Difficulty concentrating on studies
- Sleeping too much or too little
- Loss of interest in activities you normally enjoy
- Increased appetite and weight gain
- Feeling withdrawn and isolated
How does it work?
Light therapy involves sitting near a specialised bright light that mimics natural sunlight. This helps reset your circadian rhythm and boosts serotonin production.
Sessions are typically 45 minutes and can be combined with a therapy or coaching session. Many students notice improvement within the first week.
Combined approach
Light therapy works best when combined with talk therapy. At Het Palett, we can offer an integrated approach — treating both the physical and emotional aspects of seasonal depression together.
When to start?
Light therapy is most effective when started in early autumn (September-October), before symptoms become severe. But you can start at any point during winter and still benefit.
